The Benefits of a Multidisciplinary Team

A recent study in The Journal of Pain Research revealed that pain is relatively resistant to monodisciplinary therapy regimens (i.e. one type of therapy) and that no one treatment is best for all patients. The study concluded that the answer may be integrative care (massage therapy, movement therapies, relaxation techniques, structural modalities, etc.) in addition to convention treatments (medication and injections).

Recent research exploring the combination of conventional medicine with complementary and alternative therapies, such as massage, for low back pain demonstrates that a multidisciplinary treatment approach ameliorates pain and improves function and quality of life with medium to high effect, even for patients with a long history of chronic back pain. Results were better than for monodisciplinary treatments, and treatment effect remained stable at a six-month follow-up.

Immediately upon graduation, I took a 10-month course and became a certified Myofascial Integrative Structural Therapist.
